Nikolai is currently in charge of large-scale projects in Kuwait, including the new HQ for the National Bank of Kuwait and the new Kuwait International Airport terminal. He joined the practice in 1993 after completing his studies at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt and initially worked on the Commerzbank HQ and the World Port Centre. He has subsequently been responsible for a large variety of projects in Europe, US and the Middle East. He is a keen photographer, enjoys the London art scene and often plays tennis in Battersea Park.


Nikolai Malsch studied architecture in Berlin, Barcelona and Darmstadt and is a registered architect in the United Kingdom and Germany. After graduating in he joined Foster + Partners in 1993 to work on the new Commerzbank Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany - the first ecological office tower and one of the tallest building in Europe at the time. Subsequently, he was responsible for the Agiplan Headquarters near Dusseldorf.

In 1996, Nikolai was the project architect on the competition-winning entry for the Multimedia centre in Hamburg, and worked on the project until completion in 1999. This mixed-use urban regeneration development included a media event space, work areas and offices for media companies as well as residential areas and shops. He subsequently worked as job captain on a variety of projects, including the World Port Centre in Rotterdam, the first high-rise building within the Foster + Partners masterplan scheme for the area.

He was the project director responsible for the competition-winning entry for the masterplan of a new terminal on the south side of Frankfurt airport. He worked on the project for a period of over four years between 2001 and 2005, working closely with the Frankfurt planning department and the airport operators. He then worked on the concept and design for Heathrow East Terminal.

He has been responsible for a number of projects, including the Dolder Grand Hotel, a luxury 5 star hotel development in Zurich, Switzerland, which was completed in 2008.

Recently, he has been one of the partners-in-charge of several projects in Kuwait: A 300-metre-high office tower for the National Bank of Kuwait, in Kuwait City, and the new Kuwait International Airport terminal and a private assembly building. All projects combine structural innovation with high environmental performance to cope with the extremes of Kuwait's climate. He is also working on several major masterplanning projects in the Middle East and Asia.

He was made an associate in 1997, a project director in 2002, a partner in 2004 and senior partner in 2017.
