Foster + Partners offers new Model Maker apprenticeships

To help cultivate the next generation of skilled model makers, Foster + Partners has been instrumental in bringing forward the UK’s first Model Maker Apprenticeship Standard. The practice is now offering a new Model Maker Apprenticeship in association with Arts University Bournemouth, beginning in September 2025.

Foster + Partners chaired a Trailblazer Group to develop the Model Maker Apprenticeship standard, in collaboration with a range of creative companies, universities, and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).

Diane Teague, Assistant Head of Modelmaking at Foster + Partners and Co-Chair of the Trailblazer Group, said: “We’re proud to be pioneering the first apprenticeship of its kind in the exciting world of creative modelmaking. The programme offers a unique opportunity to dive straight into a hands-on career, working alongside leading designers and exploring cutting-edge technologies and craftsmanship. It establishes a creative approach that combines both education and industry, and we’re thrilled to welcome the next generation of makers who are ready to learn, create, and shape the future.”

The three-year programme is a level 6 qualification, which is equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn modelmaking in a workplace environment (80%), with academic training provided by Arts University Bournemouth (20%). They are exempt from paying tuition fees and receive a salary, as well as other benefits, which include:

•    Working with industry experts
•    Access to an assigned mentor from Foster + Partners
•    Being part of a community of apprentices
•    Residential sessions at AUB
     •    Learn, explore or discuss subjects, software and processes with in-person classes
     •    Residential accommodation provided by AUB
     •    Company-paid travel allowance
•    University support, including
     •    Wellbeing
     •    In-person Academic Support
     •    Study Skills
     •    Career counselling
     •    Library
     •    Specialist workshops

The apprenticeships have been set up to improve the link between creative companies and academia, while also contributing to improving diversity in the profession. The scheme demonstrates how the industry can work together to make a positive contribution in its development.
