Foster + Partners is delighted to announce the publication of Portfolio – a complete account of the first fifty years of the practice. In bookstores on 23 September, the 540-page book provides a visual record that celebrates the practice's breadth of works: both built and unbuilt. Including a foreword by Norman Foster as well as essays from respected architectural critic Peter Buchanan, it offers fresh insight into the practice.

For the first time, Portfolio features photographs of every project completed in the practice's first five decades, as well as drawings of its most important unrealised designs.

With nearly 500 images – many previously unpublished – the book highlights the contribution that the studio has made to a range of design challenges. Arranged in five decade-long chapters, spanning from 1967 to 2017, it is a chronological logbook of over 345 built works, with drawings of unbuilt works appearing at the end of each decade. Connected by colour and light, or contrasted by form and function, the image pairings offer a unique insight into one of the most well-known studios in the world.

Notes to editors:

  • Foster+ Partners is an international studio for architecture, urbanism and design, rooted in sustainability, which was founded in 1967 by Norman Foster. Since then, he and the team around him have established a global practice with a worldwide reputation for thoughtful and pioneering design, working as a single studio that is both ethnically and culturally diverse. The practice integrates the skills of architecture with those of engineering, both structural and environmental, urbanism, interior and industrial design, model and film making, aeronautics and many more. Its collegiate working environment is similar to a compact university. Its diverse skills make it capable of tackling a wide range of projects, particularly those of considerable complexity and scale.
  • Norman Foster is founder and executive chairman of Foster+ Partners. He has been awarded architecture's highest accolades, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Praemium lmperiale Award for Architecture in Japan, the RIBA Royal Gold medal and the AIA Gold medal. He is president of the Norman Foster Foundation, based in Madrid. In 1999 he was honoured with a Life Peerage, becoming Lord Foster of Thames Bank.
  • Peter Buchanan worked as an architect and urban designer in various parts of Africa, Europe and the Middle East before starting to publish. He is now a freelance writer, curator and consultant who has published several hundred essays and articles in journals worldwide. His many books include the five volumes of Renzo Piano Building Workshop: Complete Works (Phaidon Press) and Ten Shades of Green: Architecture and the Natural World (W.W. Norton) that accompanied the major travelling exhibition that he curated about sustainable architecture.
  • Tom Wright is an editor and writer specialising in the arts, architecture and the built environment. He is the in-house editor at Foster + Partners.
