Phase one of The Aleph in Buenos Aires a new luxury residential development containing 57 apartments over nine floors has been launched today. The Aleph is the latest addition to Alan Faenas portfolio of luxury residences in the city and is due to complete in 2010.
Taking inspiration from Buenos Aires traditional casa chorizo houses and the architectural vernacular of courtyards and open terraces, a number of the apartments feature double-height balconies. The residences are designed to take advantage of the citys pleasant climate by blurring the boundaries between inside and outside space reinventing the traditional courtyards within each apartment in the form of an external room. Each dual-aspect apartment is enclosed by glazed panels and bronzed aluminium sun screens, balancing the need for solar shading with daylight and cooling breezes. In the apartments, exposed vaulted ceilings have been incorporated to enhance the sense of space and height.
As part of a wider masterplan for the Puerto Madero district, phase one of The Aleph will be completed with two further residential blocks. Continuing the courtyard theme, these will be arranged around two central gardens in a T-shaped formation, enlivened by a fringe of shops at the base.

The three penthouses are complemented by generous open terraces and the building will be topped by a swimming pool on the roof, with car parking provided in the basement.
The bronzed screens, limestone flooring and organic colours were selected to cohere with the post-industrial brick buildings around the revitalised dock area, now a creative quarter within walking distance of the financial district and city centre.
Each apartment will contain kitchen and bathroom suites designed by Foster + Partners.
Entrance is via the garden at the centre of the block, with two banks of elevators in the lobby area. Separate service access is also provided.
