Gomera Masterplan

Strategies for water conservation, recycling and the installation of ‘smart’ user systems

Gomera Masterplan
Spain
1975

Our client wanted to investigate Gomera's potential as a tourist destination – in responding to that brief, the masterplan raised issues of sustainability long before the 'green' agenda was being addressed worldwide. Its aim was to encourage self-sustaining development on the island, based on a combination of indigenous construction techniques and prefabrication. The report stressed gradual change and was in deliberate contrast to the aggressive patterns of commercial development being implemented throughout the Mediterranean at that time. This led to a model of decentralisation, with solar desalination, rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse at the level of the individual home.
