Masdar Institute

Designing a high performance envelope and promoting natural ventilation; exploiting the thermal properties of a building’s mass for cooling and harnessing solar gains for heating.

2007 - 2015

The buildings of the Masdar Institute are the first to be completed within Masdar City and have established the sustainable design principles for subsequent development. The compact urban form was developed through analysis of ancient desert settlements. Buildings are positioned to shade one another and the narrow, pedestrian streets below and cooling air currents are directed through the public spaces using a contemporary interpretation of the region’s traditional wind towers. The residential buildings incorporate mashrabiya shading screens, while the laboratory facades are insulated by ETFE cushions.
