When it was completed in 1974, Willis Faber was radical for the social dimension offered by its pool, rooftop garden and restaurant, and for its flexibility – the project pioneered the use of raised office floors, anticipating the revolution in information technology. The impact of every interior detail has been carefully considered, including the reflective aluminium ceiling channels, which reduce the sense of enclosure in the deep office floor plate. The entrance is animated by cascading escalators, rising up through the building and has studded rubber flooring and demountable partitions, while the office floors are carpeted and have a custom-designed ceiling system – an indication of the social priorities of the democratic workplace, as well as a pragmatic response to a fixed budget.
