Building on the success of the practice’s seminal Hongkong and Shanghai Bank in Hong Kong, the headquarters tower in Canary Wharf set new standards in London office design. The practice designed every space in the 100,000 square metre building, from the kitchens to the executive boardrooms. In addition to light-filled offices and flexible trading floors, which integrate state-of-the-art technology, dealing and communications systems, the interior embraces a health club, client hospitality suites, social spaces and an 850-seat restaurant, with more than 70 metres of counter space – including a custom-designed 17 metre marble counter top. The atrium features a 6.6 metre high ‘history wall’, designed by Thomas Heatherwick, which is made up of 3,743 images that mark the history and achievements of the bank – viewed from afar, it reveals the letters ‘HSBC’.
