Faustino Winery - Interiors

Castilla y Leon, Spain
2007 - 2010

Bodegas Portia winery in the Ribera del Duero is unusual for its openness and transparency, and for the direct connection between the architecture and wine-making process. At the heart of the building, the central public space is enclosed by translucent u-glass, which allows visitors a glimpse of the central blending tanks and activity. It encourages exploration, inviting visitors to go through the building along the raised galleries, which have direct or indirect views over the three main halls. The materials palette evokes the language of the wine-making process; for example, slats of recycled wine barrels form the cladding of the public spaces and restaurant flooring, and the stainless steel of the vats is echoed in the bar counter. Woven bronze wall panels and timber slatted ceilings combine with polished concrete floors to produce a refined, industrial aesthetic.
