2002 - 2008
The Dolder Grand was originally a ‘curhaus’ or health resort, and an important part of the hotel’s 2008 refurbishment and expansion was the creation of a stylish new spa. In a fusion of interior and exterior elements, the richly textured, winding stone walls that begin in the landscape continue into the building to define a canyon-like space for the 25-metre pool. An elemental palette of water, stone, reflection and filtered light is used throughout to provide an immersive sanctuary; and in the dramatic black-tiled pool, the reflection of stone in the water creates an illusion of infinite space. In some areas, the stone walls are perforated to allow sunlight to filter inside, in a dynamic play of light and shadow, while maintaining absolute privacy.
