The design concept is based on the principles of natural light, views, clear circulation and the creation of a quiet, calm atmosphere to reduce patients’ anxiety. More in the spirit of a hotel than a traditional hospital, the colour palette is a warm, welcoming mixture of ochre and rich rust, and the daylight drawn through circular skylights in the atrium is softened by suspended ribbons of translucent Kvadrat fabric. Great attention is paid to finer details often overlooked in conventional hospital design: for example, unnecessary, institutional signage is minimised, and the wide operating theatre corridors consider the patients’ viewpoint when lying on a trolley – by pushing overhead lights to one side, the design avoids the harsh effect of obtrusive ‘motorway’ central strip lighting.
