就建筑物可以如何影响人们的生活质量,地铁系统是一个绝佳展示。铁路流通空间的起点和终点都在街面,它们也是乘客旅行体验的一部分,但是人们通常却将列车隧道的施工与流通空间的供给分来来看。毕尔巴鄂地铁沿内尔韦恩(Nervión)河岸而建,其设计和建造分两个时期进行,以使其成为一对相接的列车线路。它的独特之处在于从一开始,其建筑、工程、施工和平面设计都被视作一个整体而进行,且在一个共同的愿景下完成。

当前,大多数地铁系统的运用都相当繁琐,最终要依赖复杂的标示系统来告诉乘客怎么走。在毕尔巴鄂(Bilbao),情况则恰恰相反,设计使建筑本身非常清晰可辨:进出路线清楚,自动扶梯或者玻璃升降机将乘客直接带到宽敞的站台;而其本身的高度足以允许在列车上方加上不锈钢夹层和楼梯。以这样的方式穿过一整个大空间将是非常激动人心的体验,而且该构想具有高度灵活性。这些空间的弧线造型呈现了它们所附的巨大荷载,这体现了其设计初衷。同时它们的施工也反映了毕尔巴鄂的工程传统——开创性地将移动门架用于航空航天工业的西班牙工程师们又采用了这项技术,用它来架起这些预制的用于车站建设的混凝土板。 

深埋在地下的2号线无法采用自动扶梯,一排排升降梯便取而代之,成为标志性的、极易辨认的地铁入口。犹如新艺术主义(Art Nouveau Métro)地铁站入口在巴黎独一无二的意义,内城1号线入口处的玻璃顶棚(或Fosteritos)充分体现了该地铁站在毕尔巴鄂(Bilbao)的独特性。它们的造型易于倾斜移动,自动扶梯从隧道升至地面的动态轮廓就是如此。在白天,日光可以穿透顶棚,在夜晚,有灯光照射的顶棚成为街景中一座迷人的灯塔。
