北京的新国际航站楼是世界上最大、最先进的机场建筑,这不仅体现于其采用的先进技术,而且体现在乘客的旅行体验,其运作效率以及其环保的设计。作为第二十九届奥运会参赛运动员入京的门户,新国际航站楼的设计所具有的象征意义为友好和热情。它是一个城市的标志,其高耸的空气动力学屋顶和龙的造型喻示着飞行的快感和诗意,同时也是对中国传统的颜色和符号的呼唤。

航站大楼及地面运输中心(GTC)位于现有东跑道和未来的第三条跑道之间,围绕的地面面积约1.3万平方米,预计到2020年,每年乘客吞吐量将达5千万人。虽然对新航站楼的构想是使其拥有空前的规模,但其设计依旧延续斯坦斯特德和赤腊角采用的新机场样式。和其前身一样,新航站楼的设计最大化其对于适应航空工业发展不可预知性的高度灵活性;它旨在解决现代空中旅行的复杂性,同时兼具空间清晰感和高品质的客服标准。公共交通完整地整合至航站楼设计中,使得乘客步行距离变短;楼层变化极少,转机时间也已最小化。和赤腊角机场一样,航站楼对室外视野开阔,并也拥有一个一体化的顶篷,顶篷上设有线型天窗,既有助于指引方向又利于自然采光——当乘客穿过航站楼时,屋顶上散发出的灯光从红色变成黄色。

新航站楼的设计结合了广泛的被动式环保设计概念,其为世界上最环保的建筑之一。其采用的被动式环境设计概念,从清晨日出开始时候通过东南朝向的天窗最大化日照得热量,另外通过集成式环境控制系统最大限度地减少能源消耗。在建造方面,选材建立在当地可选范围、功能、施工技能和低成本采购的基础上,设计优化了所选材料的性能。令人赞叹的是,新航站楼的设计和建造在短短四年内就完成了。
