Lord Foster was awarded the BGA Medal of Honour for services to Anglo-German relations at a ceremony at 30 St Mary Axe last night. The BGA Medal of Honour was founded in 1993 by the current President, Lord Watson of Richmond and is awarded strictly on merit at the discretion of the Board of the BGA. Previous recipients have included Sir Edward Heath, Lord Jenkins of Hillhead (on retiring as President of the European Commission), Helmut Schmidt (ex Bundeskanzler), Lord (Douglas) Hurd, Dr Alan Russell (Dresden Trust), Sir Leon Brittan (on retiring as Vice-Chairman of the European Commission), Lufthansa CEO and Siemens CEO.

Receiving the award Lord Foster said: I feel incredibly privileged to have been working in Germany for over 19 years where the attitude and spirit around ecology and energy is so progressive. I am a Germanophile and deeply indebted to Germany for its many opportunities that we have been afforded. Our office in Berlin is growing and more than 20% of our London studio are German architects. We are grateful for the wealth of talent that we have been able to access here and in Germany.
