The third annual RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship will award a travel grant of £6,000 to one student, selected from over 100 architecture schools with RIBA validation in the UK and abroad. The grant funds international research on a topic and in a location of the students choice, to be presented in a report which can be photographic, graphic or written and represented in the RIBA Presidents Medals Student Awards exhibition.
Formerly a biennial programme, the scholarship established in 2006 has proved popular in attracting submissions from RIBA validated colleges all over the world. An additional donation made in 2008 by Foster + Partners has enabled the scheme to run annually.
The judging panel includes Lord Foster and Sunand Prasad, the President of the RIBA. Applicants will be chosen on the basis of proposals submitted for an area of research, which might include: learning from the past to inform the future; the future of society; the density of settlements; sustainability; the use of resources; the quality of urban life and transport. Each school of architecture can nominate only one student. In order to be eligible, students must have successfully completed at least the first year of the Part 1 degree.
The submission deadline for the scholarship has been amended and is now Monday 23 February 2009, with travel to be carried out by the successful applicant between June and September 2009.
Norman Foster said:
"It is a real privilege to fund the Travelling Scholarship and I have been thrilled to see it generate high quality work from talented individuals. The success of the Scholarship has prompted the recent additional donation, which will allow the scheme to run annually, giving more students the opportunity to benefit from it."
Sunand Prasad said:
I am delighted that Foster + Partners have decided to increase the amount of the endowment. This is terrific news to allow for more students to benefit from this very creative initiative.
