Gerard Evenden joined the practice in 1991 following his graduation from the Welsh School of Architecture at UWIST. His first project at Foster + Partners was the Sarriko Station on the Bilbao Metro. Other early projects included a masterplan for Imperial College London ITN Headquarters and a private house in Corsica. He was also involved in designing masterplans for Green Park office development, the Riverside Precinct in Adelaide for the South Australian Government, and Imperial College, London. In addition, he worked on the scheme design for the first sustainable LEED Gold accredited commercial tower in Manhattan – the award winning Hearst Corporation Tower.

He has wide experience of designing transport buildings and rail stations. He led the team on Canary Wharf Station in London from concept through to completion in 1999. He subsequently managed the design team on Singapore’s Expo Station completed in 2002 and in 2001 his team won the international competition for the Florence High Speed Rail Station which is currently underway.

Other recent work includes two high-rise projects in Sydney: Deutsche Bank Place, a 36-storey premium grade office development; and a mixed-use twin-tower scheme on the site of Sydney’s former Regent Theatre comprising residential/serviced apartment towers above a retail and commercial podium.

He is presently a senior partner and group leader at Foster + Partners, directing teams on a diverse range of projects internationally and in the UK. Current projects include The Troika in Kuala Lumpur, three luxury residential towers in Malaysia and the Index Building, a mixed-use 80-storey tower in Dubai. He leads a large team working in Abu Dhabi.

Current projects there include the World Trade Centre at Al Raha Beach and the Masdar Initiative masterplan – a new 6 million square meter carbon neutral and zero waste community – which is currently on site. In addition, he is responsible for several other projects within Masdar, including a new university. Also on site in Abu Dhabi is Central Markets, a large mixed use development on one of the oldest sites in the city. Inspired by the traditional architecture of the Gulf this scheme aims to reinvent the market place as a contemporary mixed-use complex to give the city a new civic heart.

He is also leading the team designing the UAE 2010 Expo Pavillion and the new Sheikh Zayed National Museum.
