Armstong Yakubu studied at the Architectural Association in London before joining Foster + Partners in 1987. He initially worked on Century Tower, Tokyo, Japan, followed by the American Air Museum, Duxford and a masterplan for Imperial College in London. He was subsequently project architect for the Canary Wharf Station on the London Underground Jubilee Line Extension.

He was made an associate in 1992 and moved to Hong Kong to work on the new MTRC Lantau and Airport Railway. He then became project director responsible for the design of the Hong Kong Air Cargo Super Terminal at the new airport at Chek Lap Kok.

He returned to London in 1999 where he worked on HSBC’s 40-storey headquarters building at Canary Wharf. During this period he was involved in numerous competitions in the USA, becoming the project architect for the Hyatt Headquarters in Chicago and the flagship store for Asprey in New York, completed in 2004.

In 2004 he was promoted to partner and deputy team leader, responsible for a wide range of projects. He had a special focus on the Murezzan development in St. Moritz, Switzerland, a commercial development for Spinningfields, Manchester, UK and the recently completed Elephant House for Copenhagen Zoo.

He has also worked on a range of projects on the East coast of America including Tower 2 at the World Trade Centre, a residential tower at 10 UN Plaza and a gallery for Sperone West, all in Manhattan, as well as the redevelopment of the Old Convention Centre Site in Washington D.C., as well as leading new design projects in Copenhagen, the Canary Islands and Buenos Aires. He is also currently involved in a number of projects in India, including a large masterplan for a development at Noida, south-east of Delhi.

He has recently joined Spencer de Grey, David Nelson and Mouzhan Majidi as a full time member of the Design Board, engaged in the practice-wide design review process. He has particular responsibility for the development of design from its strategic concept to its detailed realisation.
