American Air Museum

Cambridge/ UK, 1987-1997

Enveloped by a single vaulted enclosure, the Museum’s drama comes from the powerful arc of its roof - engineered to support suspended aircraft - and the sweep of the glazed southern wall overlooking the runway. Despite the fact that the structure is partly sunk into the ground, its fully glazed elevation and a continuous strip of glass around the base of the vault washes the interior in daylight.

Canary Wharf Underground Station

London/ UK, 1991-1999

The entire roof of the station is laid out as a landscaped park; the only visible station elements are the swelling glass canopies that cover its three entrances and draw daylight deep into the station concourse. At 300 metres in length it is as long as Canary Wharf Tower is tall. The robust aesthetic is achieved by a simple palette of hard-wearing materials that create the dramatic atmosphere.

Chek Lap Kok Airport, Hong Kong

Hong Kong/ Hong Kong, 1992-1998

Chek Lap Kok is one of the world’s largest airports and this was among the most ambitious construction projects of modern times. The terminal building extends a concept pioneered at Stansted Airport. With its uncluttered spaces, bathed in light, it forms a spectacular gateway to the city.

Reichstag, New German Parliament

Berlin/ Germany, 1992-1999

The transformation of the Reichstag is rooted in four issues: the significance of the Bundestag as a democratic forum; a commitment to public accessibility; a sensitivity to history; and a rigorous environmental agenda. Emphasising values of clarity and transparency, the glazed cupola is a new landmark for Berlin, and a symbol of the vigour of the German democratic process.
