Lusail, Qatar

Situated to the north of Doha, Lusail is a new city with a projected population of 200,000. Due to complete in 2010, it extends over an area of 35 sqkm. The city will provide a high quality living environment by combining well-planned residential, commercial, hospitality, mixed-use and entertainment districts, balanced with open spaces and parks. Foster + Partners’ has been working with Qatari Diar on a mixed-use commercial scheme that forms the heart of the development. Currently at concept design stage, the scheme design is shortly due to start. Underpinning the scheme is a successful working relationship between Foster + Partners and Qatari Diar, and the design process has been a highly efficient creative collaboration. Situated at the centre of the city, the scheme comprises four commercial towers together with 500,000sqm low-rise buildings and 50,000sqm retail, as well as basement parking areas. Varying in height, the four towers create a distinctive and bold profile on the city’s skyline. They are elegantly sculpted to maximise views towards the sea and take full advantage of natural light.
