Circle Bath
Bath, UK, 2006-2009
The Centre of Clinical Excellence in Bath is the first of a series of hospitals which are designed to place patients at the centre of a new approach to healthcare: everyone (whether a surgeon, nurse or porter) is a partner in the delivery of care. The architectural ambition is to re-cast the hospital building as a humane and civilised space.
This project presents a calm, well orchestrated solution that integrates high technology medicine into a healing environment. It combines natural light (through glazed facades and double height atriums) with access to fresh air. The shared central space unites the building’s activities and includes a café, nurses’ station and reception point.
Externally, the Bath scheme assumes an elegant and subtle profile that is embedded into the south-facing landscape. It prioritises idyllic views of Bath’s rolling countryside. Sympathetic landscaping further emphasises the therapeutic natural environment. The overall approach provides a clear distinction from more familiar hospital surroundings.
Internally, the division between functional zones is minimised, easing the stress involved in consultation, treatment and recovery for patients. Walking distances for staff are kept to a minimum. The compact scale of the building (6000m²) eliminates the confusion and disorientation common in larger hospitals.
Housing a number of operating theatres, bedrooms, consultation, treatment and recovery spaces, and offering both in-patient and out-patient accommodation, the new Centre of Clinical Excellence in Bath proposes an enlightened alternative.
