Acerbis - Cambridge Shelving
Various, Italy, 1997
The collaboration with the Acerbis project began with thorough market research and rigorous detailed technical engineering and culminated in the successful delivery and installation of the shelving system at Cambridge in May 1995.
The Cambridge Shelving system was first developed by Foster + Partners for Acerbis for the Cambridge Law Faculty Library to answer specific requirements for library equipment where no adequate solutions were found to exist. The key design criteria were: ease of assembly; the ability to integrate a multitude of accessories; durability in use; and a neutral palette of materials suitable for a variety of architectural contexts. The system is self supporting and very flexible. Accessories include lighting, computer shelves and CD and video racks, together with drawers and sliding doors for the domestic market. A wide range of materials allows the system to be individualized to its environment: backs and doors come in wood or glass; shelves come in wood, glass or steel; and finishes include natural cherry or maple veneer, or white lacquer.
