The Cambridge Shelving system was first developed by the practice for Acerbis within the context of the Cambridge Law Faculty Library. It answered specific requirements for library equipment where no adequate solutions could be found. The key design criteria were: ease of assembly; the ability to integrate accessories; durability in use; and a neutral palette of materials suitable for a variety of contexts.
The collaboration with the Acerbis project team was intense, ranging from market research and technical engineering through to the installation of the system on site. The system is self-supporting and very flexible. Structural side panels free the back of the shelving from any supporting function, allowing the use of glass and other non-supporting materials. Accessories include lighting, computer shelves and CD and video racks, together with drawers and sliding doors for the domestic market. A wide range of materials allows the system to be individualized to its environment: shelves come in wood, glass or steel; and finishes include natural cherry or maple veneer, or white lacquer.
