Wooden Churches, photographs by Richard Davies

Foster + Partners is proud to sponsor UK photographer Richard Davies’ exhibition of photographs of Wooden Churches in Northern Russia.

Davies was inspired by the drawings and photographs of Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (1876 – 1942), the Russian artist, stage designer and illustrator of Russian Folk Tales who travelled to the Vologda and other Provinces in the North of Russia in 1902. Davies followed in his footsteps to find out which churches had survived and he discovered much to celebrate. The integrity between the landscape and the architecture of this wooden world is as striking today as it was to Bilibin, and Davies’ photographs tell of the lives of the resilient people who lived through extreme times in extreme places. Davies hopes that the photographs in this exhibition will help raise public awareness of the plight of these wonderful buildings, which are in various stages of decay, and that the restoration projects will attract the funding they deserve.
