Wind Turbine - 1995
Foster + Partners worked with Enercon to create a wind turbine that would be both efficient and reduce its own impact on the landscape. The generator is driven directly by the 32 metre-long rotor blades, negating the need for a gearbox and the associated problems with maintenance and noise pollution. The upturned winglets at the blade top were inspired by precedents in the aerospace industry that reduce noise and allow the turbine to perform efficiently at lower rotor speeds. The tower is made from pre-fabricated steel units that are light enough to be easily transported and rapidly assembled. With an individual power rating of up to 2 megawatts, the resulting turbine can generate enough clean, renewable energy to supply 1,600 homes.
