The Masdar Initiative – Appointed in 2007
Masdar City, Abu Dhabi is a vast new 6 million square metre sustainable development that, when complete, will be a carbon neutral and zero waste community for 47,500 residents. This will be achieved around four main objectives – water, transport, energy, and waste. All water, after initial use, will pass through either a grey water treatment plant for re-use or foul water treatment plant for irrigation. As a car free zone, Masdar will rely on a metro line, personal rapid transit system (PRT) and light rapid transport network (LRT). In profiling the waste streams, the development can focus on reducing the amount of waste generated. The remaining waste will be sorted at source to maximise the potential for it to be recycled or composted, after which any residual material can be diverted to a waste-to-energy plant. All energy will come from Concentrating Solar Power (CSP), photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines and the waste-to-energy plant.
