Mirjam von Arx
BUILDING THE GHERKINThe award-winning film documents the planning and construction of the iconic London tower designed by British architect Norman Foster. Produced for an international audience and shot over the course of four and a half years, the film follows the evolution of the landmark development focusing on the relationship between the architects, their client Swiss Re and the City of London.
With unprecedented access to many of the design and planning meetings, the makers record a unique, startlingly honest - and occasionally searingly combative -look behind the façade of one of the most controversial landmarks on London's skyline.
“Mirjam von Arx’s BUILDING THE GHERKIN is exactly what its title implies: an 89-minute film tracing the construction of Norman Foster’s bulbous London masterpiece, from the 1992 Real IRA bomb that wrecked the Baltic Exchange and created a rare development space in the Square Mile, to the inaugural fireworks in December 2003,” wrote Richard Morrison in the Times. And he continues: “What makes it enthralling is that the process is seen from the inside. Von Arx must be a persuasive young woman, because she seems to have charmed her way to within whispering distance of every key meeting, every moment of agony and ecstasy.”
